Life is like a merry-go-round

Posted in From My Brain on August 31, 2009 by TodaysAddiction

Some get on the carousel, firmly seated in the center, feet in stirrups and hold on with both hands. They watch the brass ring off to the outer edge, knowing full well that no one ever catches it, therefore they are content. The scenery changes, the ride is fun.

Some start off like that, but after that brass ring passes a couple of times, they loosen their grip and lean out a little. They feel a little thrill, but miss some of the passing scenery while they keep their eye on the prize. They leave the ride a little frustrated as they gave up some of the passing view in chase of something unattainable.

Others never fasten the seat belt… they lean out full tilt from the gate. Their palms get a little sweaty and soon they are just holding on by their nails… the finger tips of the other hand touch the ring. Each time they lean out a little farther till their grip slips and they tumble off the horse. They knew they wouldn’t get the ring but they had the time of their life and a pretty good story to tell at the end of the ride.

We all start the ride the from the same place and we all exit it through the same gate at the end of the ride. The price of each ticket is the same. We all love the enticement of the possibility of grabbing the ring but we know the odds are stacked such that we are not going to get it, at least not without significant effort and some luck.
Whether we make the ride thrilling or predictable or frustrating is the only part we have control over.
The mechanics of the ride itself are the same for every rider.

I was talking about this idea with a friend as we discussed raising children. How we strive for perfection and yet we know we will never achieve it. If we are aware of that that going in, we are more likely to say sane while not giving up.
The ride is the same, it is as it should be… the outcome is the same as it should be as well. Therefore those imperfections are just experiences along the way. Sometimes you fall off of the horse and have a great story to tell at the end, sometimes you give a little effort and reap some frustration… sometimes you just play by the rules and hold on with both hands. In the end, everyone survives (so to speak).

It Rained

Posted in From My Brain on August 29, 2009 by TodaysAddiction

While husband was on his hike… all day, it rained.
I felt sorry for him till I watched the news and learned there was a wild fire about 20 miles away from them and the rain helped contain it…

They’re home tonight…
I’d never survive in the woods.

Husb is off…

Posted in From My Brain on August 28, 2009 by TodaysAddiction

Husb left today for his hike/camping weekend. Knowing that cell service would be spotty at best, he called as they were getting close to the trail.
Him: We are almost there, I just wanted to call while I had service.
Me: Good deal, is everything OK?
Him: Well….
and the call dropped.

He called tonight, tired and happy. They were setting up camp. Tomorrow should be fun, it’s supposed to rain.

Waiting…

Posted in From My Brain on August 27, 2009 by TodaysAddiction

Things kind of petered out with #3 yesterday… First babies are fickle.
It’s gotta be frustrating for Mom, I remember the hopefulness that came with those first practice labors too. It’s all good prep work however for when those contractions really start doing their thing.

Husband took off today for LoLo Pass. I’m hoping he’s not a LoLo in in adventures. I’m tracking them on GPS.

#3 had been having contractions for a couple of hours now… still far apart but fairly regular.
I’m packing so I’m ready, will keep you posted.
