Maybe I just don’t get where the threat lies…

Posted in Family, From My Brain, From The News on December 19, 2008 by Addict

I’m watching 20/20 and the topic of gay marriage was covered with a preacher…
and I just don’t get it.

I don’t believe that love and marriage have all that much to do with each other (call me a romantic). I can love someone for the rest of my life and not have been married to them. I can be married to them for the rest of my life and never have loved them. Both happen to people everyday, neither is uncommon.

Marriage (to me) is a legal contract much akin to an adoption. A legal standing of family. Next of kin.
Husb is the person who makes my decisions if ever the day comes that I cannot. He is the person who will clean up my earthly mess when I am gone. He is my self-designated plug puller.
How can the government (complete with separation of church and state) not recognise half of the population based solely on their gender, as being capable of that job?

Why does a marriage, that is in essence a legal agreement have to be sanctioned by God to be valid? Who decides which parts of the Bible are valid in today’s society and which parts we disregard? I can’t marry the girl next door because I’m a girl… but the whole spare the rod, spoil the child thing is now against the law… not that I’m advocating any method of child discipline, but you get the point.

Maybe I’m simple, but I don’t see how the ladies (or gentlemen) next door, who enter a legal contract with the state, declaring each other as being family is any threat to the institution of marriage, to national security or the religious infrastructure as a whole.

Public Safety ~or~ Abuse of Power?

UNION CITY, Ga. – A McDonald’s employee spent a night in jail and is facing criminal charges because a police officer’s burger was too salty, so salty that he says it made him sick.

Kendra Bull was arrested Friday, charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct and freed on $1,000 bail.

Bull, 20, said she accidentally spilled salt on hamburger meat and told her supervisor and a co-worker, who “tried to thump the salt off.”

On her break, she ate a burger made with the salty meat. “It didn’t make me sick,” Bull told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

But then Police Officer Wendell Adams got a burger made with the oversalted meat, and he returned a short time later and told the manager it made him sick.

Bull admitted spilling salt on the meat, and Adams took her outside and questioned her, she said.

“If it was too salty, why did (Adams) not take one bite and throw it away?” said Bull, who has worked at the restaurant for five months. She said she didn’t know a police officer got one of the salty burgers because she couldn’t see the drive-through window from her work area.

Police sent samples of the burger to the state crime lab for tests.

City public information officer George Louth said Bull was charged because she served the burger “without regards to the well-being of anyone who might consume it.”

Since when is being pro-active such hard work?

The city council meeting is to decide to accept, decline or defer the parking recommendations for downtown on Monday. It’s crunch time to come up with numbers of people to either come to the council meeting and stand with us or to garner people to e-mail city council members to request a delay (until after the formation of the Business improvement district). The city, unfortunatly seems to only be looking at revenue to be gained from parking tickets, and they seem willing to sacrafice many of the smaller businesses downtown to do that.

Friday I spent hours with owners/managers of spas, salons, resturants, coffee houses discussing parking issues. Many are not even so concerned with limits so much as their being no way to spend more than 2 hours in a shopping district… no exceptions are being proposed for customers who’s shopping needs extend past the 2 hour limit. A few people are meeting me at the shop prior to the meeting so we can go together… there will be several similar groups gathering before hand.
I also distributed about fifty printed sheets to businesses than might be negatively affected with info for those who cannot attend, so thier voice will still be heard via e-mails:

“Everyone downtown should have received a letter from the City last
week regarding the Public Hearing
on Downtown Parking – Monday, Oct 23rd at 6:30 PM.

A public hearing is being held on whether the City Council should
adopt all 19 recommendations presented by Barney & Worth.

Two recommendations are possible problems for downtown:

1. Replace free parking with 2 hour parking throughout downtown

2. Develop and implement paid on-street parking by October 2009

The Salem Downtown Partnership is asking the City Council to delay any
decision on time limits or meters until after the Business Improvement
District is created and the Salem Downtown Partnership is fully
staffed. This will give downtown opportunity to have meaningful
dialog on the economic impact of these changes, and to what extent the
public and our downtown community support parking changes.

If you agree that sweeping changes to downtown parking need more
discussion – we need you at
council Monday night. You don’t have to testify (unless you
want to). All we ask is that when Doug Vande Griend presents his
testimony – we all stand up behind him and show our support. Bring
your friends, spouses, children, etc – we need numbers.

If we fail to show support Monday
night, time limits will be implemented now and meters will follow in
2009 or before.

If you would like to communicate with city councilors on this issue
prior the the Monday meeting feel free to contact them at (send to all
of them!):

Two years in a row

Posted in From My Brain, From My Job, From The News on June 26, 2006 by Addict

For the last two years a popular arts and entertainment publication does a poll for the “Best of Salem”. Both years we were voted the Salem’s Best Tattoo/Piercing Studio!

They came in today to let us know and to take some photos. Had I known they were voting, I’d have voted (and tried to con others to do the same to tip the scales) but we took it anyway :)

I’ll post the link to the list when it’s available on-line (in a few days).
It’s true… I’m a press whore.

‘Scuse me… I’m with the band.

So late, late, I went down to the shop to say “good-night”. Ryan and Phillip (I believe) were kind enough to hold me up… I was dead tired!
Brian went with them to Washington today to do some more tattooing and will be back soon (I hope!)…
They did a walk through video last night of the shop that may perhaps end up on their Web site as a video post one day… I’ll watch for it and let you know!
Well that was fun, now back to real life!

So… Why is it than when someone yawns, it makes me yawn, but when someone snores, it keeps me awake?

SALEM CITY COUNCIL

City delays action on downtown parking
Plan to set 2-hour limits is put on hold until after a study

DENNIS THOMPSON
Statesman Journal

March 21, 2006

Salem will perform a comprehensive study of the demand for downtown parking before considering whether to put a two-hour limit on parking there, the City Council voted Monday.

The council also voted to delay completing the study until after the Marion County Courthouse reopens so its impact on downtown parking can be considered.

“Nobody seems to have an answer, but everyone has a concern,” Council President Jim Randall said, agreeing to the delay suggested by Councilor Brad Nanke. “We need to get this right.”

The study will provide a comprehensive assessment of downtown parking, including how much turnover takes place on the streets and how long cars park there.

In delaying the decision about two-hour parking, the council heeded the advice of both the Downtown Advisory Board and the CAN-DO neighborhood association. Both groups voted against imposing a two-hour limit without first proving that it was necessary and would work.

“I think it would be good to have someone from outside come look at it and give us some ideas,” Mark Shipman, the chairman of the Downtown Advisory Board, told the council Monday.

Sylvia Dorney, the owner of Greenbaum’s Quilted Forest and an advisory board member, told councilors that the two groups plan to hold their own parking forum in April.

The city initiated a two-hour parking limit along four south-downtown blocks in November, after business owners complained that people going to the Salem Conference Center were using all of the on-street parking.

The two-hour limit is in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

Councilor Frank Walker said he has walked the two-hour limit area and has found support for the policy.

“My own conversations with many of the business owners in that area is this program is working. The parking study is warranted, and we should proceed with it,” Walker said.

He later added, “I don’t think there’s any high-level dissatisfaction with what we’ve done so far.”

However, a staff report assessing the current two-hour limit noted several businesses that had concerns about the policy.

For example, two counselors with offices on High Street said they were worried about being able to complete psychological evaluations within the two-hour period.

Owners of salons, tattoo parlors and other establishments also have voiced concerns.

The delay give those of us with serious concerns a chance to continue to organize and put together a working plan…
I’ve gone to and spoke at all of the city council meetings (the first speech was quite memorable as in nervous chatter I accidently stated {into a microphone and on CCTV} that I was picturing the city council and mayor naked, but that’s another post, anything to make an impression I guess!) when parking was on the agenda….
Limits are fine, but a concession needs to be made for long term customers and/or paid parking w/valadation from retail establishments for “all day wanderers” need to be considered as well.

Yay for delays and studys and Horray for Can-Do and the Downtown Advisory Board!
